Fort Apocalypse Fort Apocalypse - ReviewThis game was one of the first on the old great C64, and I doubt it was ever released on anther platform. Released in 1982 this game set the standards for C64 games. The title screen Your missionYou start the game in a helicopter above the surface of a huge underground maze inhabited by enemy tanks and choppers. Your mission is to enter the maze and work your way down to the big reactor and destroy it before it explodes. Fuelling up at the start On your way you meet enemy helicopters and tanks which fire missiles at you, and other protections to stop you way such as laser beams which are turned on and off. To your assistance, helping you to navigate and avoid enemies, you have a map at the top of the screen - the Navatron - showing your and the enemies positions. Inside the planet picking up some allies The fuel in your helicopter is constantly consumed, so you must re-fuel on special places within the planet. You also must not take too long time, or the reactor will blow up, killing you and your allied friends. If you succeed in rescuing all men, blowing the reactor and getting back to the surface in time you will have a high rank. Fail and you will have a low rank, such as Sparrow. Three to go The graphics of the game are very clear, and well suited to its purpose. More detail of fancy design would have been completely wasted on a game like this. The music is non-existent. All to hear is the noise from the enemies and the noise of the explosions when something is blown up. And this is all you need. Seldom have I played a game which is so focused on the gameplay, stripping away all un-necessary details. Hmm... I need some more practice Overall impressionThis game is really amazing. You become instantly addicted (at home my brother, my father and I would take turns playing the game for hours). And when you finally succeed (which is HARD), then you can change the settings of the game - harder enemies (faster and with more rapid firing) and stronger gravitation makes it a real bitch! Well, folks, games really do not get any better than this! This is definitely one of the best game ever released, period. RatingThis is my personal rating of this game.
