Hades Nebula Hades Nebula - ReviewThis game came right out of the blue in 1987. Event though I consider it to be one of the greatest shoot'em ups on the C64 it really never became a hit, perhaps because it was released by a relatively unknown company, Paranoid Software. Intro graphics Your missionThe game is a classical shoot'em up situated in space where you are in charge of a small ship and alone set out to blast the evil space empire. Well, you've probably heard it before. The title screen Your fire power is quite weak at first, but luckily you can shoot ground objects to release powerups like speedup of the ship, triple fire and shielding rotors which attach to your ship in the front or to the sides. But be careful because you can destroy the powerups by hitting them with your fire. Get some action on the first stage The game is *REALLY* tough from the beginning to the end. The numerous kinds of enemies show up a wide variety of attack patterns. Some follow their own track regardless of your moves, but some are more intelligent moving straight at you resulting in a certain loss of a ship (unless you have enough fire power). Luckily you don't have to restart at the beginning of the level. After the relatively easy first level, the enemies increase dramatically in number. Cruising down the nicely designed blue level The graphics in this game is some of the best I have ever seen on a C64. The enemies are rich in number and nicely animated. The backgrounds also are of a very high standard. Even though the same graphic elements repeat throughout the game, it never becomes monotonous. What really impresses me is the number of sprites on the screen at the same time - this game really uses all the possibilities of the C64 hardware. A yellow background on one of the later levels The music is really worth to mention. Composed by one of the great musicians on the C64, Ben Daglish, the music fits perfect to the action paced atmosphere of the game. The end of game boss Overall impressionThis is a great shooter - no questions about that. Being one of the technically most advanced games on the C64, the gameplay however suffers because of the difficulty of the game. If you like games like this also take a look at games like Warhawk and Slap Fight. RatingThis is my personal rating of this game.
