Popeye - Review

Popeye is another of those conversions of popular arcade game. Even though many C64 titles focused more on the popularity of the arcade game (or movie titles in many other cases), many turned out to be great games, even though not always very true to the original. Popeye is one of the few conversions which are both fun to play and true to the original. The game was released in 1984 by RDH Soft.

Your mission

Naturally you impersonate Popeye, the sailor, which has a crush on Olivia. Problem is, Brutus also happens to like Olivia, and will do his best to prevent Popeye from meeting her. This is a platform game where the levels have different themes. Common for all levels is that Olivia is trapped in the top part of the screen, sending out messages (in the first them hearts, on the second music notes etc) which fall to the bottom. Popeye has to collect all of those messages before they fall in the water...

Is it the incredible Hulk? No, it

Is it the incredible Hulk? No, it's Popeye who has eaten his spinach

Brutus does his best to catch Popeye. He can jump up or bend down to catch Popeye if he is on a platform above of below. He can also throw bottles at Popeye, which if not smashed will knock out Popeye. Popeye gain incredible strength just by eating a can of spinach. In this state Popeye can knock Brutus out and gain some extra time to collect Olivia's messages.

The graphics are simple, but colourful and nicely drawn. All details from the arcade game is there. The music is also nice in its simplicity.

Overall impression

I like this game. You can play it a lot without getting bored at it, and it is challenging without getting annoyingly difficult. It has all the things that make a good game.
