Rainbow Islands s the sequel to c64 and like its predecessor it's a arcade conversion. It wasn't easy to repeat the success of Bubble Bobble but the programmers of Taito possess a lot of talent.
The title screen
Your mission
Just like in c64 the idea is to blow bubbles to eliminate the enemies. But unlike Bubble Bobble, the objective is not to take away all enemies to continue, but to get to the top of the stage.
Picnic on a nice summer day
The enemies are very varied; there are spiders, bees, snails, etc. If you don't hurry, they get angry and start to chase you around the screen. If you do not make it to the top of the stage before the time runs out, the screen is flooded with water.
Cash in you well deserved award
In the game there are 7 worlds, each with its theme and 4 stages. At the end of each stage a huge boss is waiting for you. To be able to finish off with him, you need to know how to blow your bubbles well. You also get help from items you can pick up along the stage, items which make you run faster, etc.
Hurry up before you drown!
Overall impression
I like this game. You can play it a lot without getting bored at it, and it is challenging without getting annoyingly difficult. It has all the things that make a good game.
Rating
The graphics are very colourful and well designed and are very close to the original. Despite of the many enemies the game runs very well. The music is among the best heard on the C64. So, what's more to say? If you are looking for a game to kill many hour, you might very well have found what you are looking for.
