A Swedish Classic

What is the Swedish Classic?

A Swedish Classic (in Swedish En Svensk Klassiker) is the name of a competition, which consists of four events; Vasaloppet, Vätternrundan, Vansbrosimmet and Lidingöloppet. All the events take place in different places in Sweden on determined days.

In order to call yourself a Swedish Classic you must complete all four event in an un-interrupted series. Today exist three thousand people who have completed this classic competition one or several times.

Vasaloppet

Vasaloppet is a cross country skiing competicion, which take place in the beginning of February. Every year more than 35000 people ski the 90 kilometres from Sälen to Mora.

Vätternrundan

In the event Vätternrundan you bicycle around lake Vättern, the second largest lake in Sweden. The many bicyclists start in the small town Motala in the late evening (however the summer nights are never dark in Sweden) and then ride 300 kilometres. There are many control stations with fluid and light food. Every year more than 15000 people participate in this competition.

Vansbrosimmet

Vansbrosimmet is a swimming competition which takes place in Vansbro (which is quite close to Mora) two weeks after Vätternrundan. The distance is three kilometres, of which two are down-stream and the last kilometres is up-stream. The distance is a smaller problem than the water temperature - the temperature seldom reaches more than 17 degrees Celsius in the middle of July. Normally 6000 people participate in this competition.

Lidingöloppet

The event Lidingöloppet takes place in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, in the beginning of October. The 10000 competitors run 30 kilometres around a very beautiful - and tough - track.
